Engineers around the world are hard at work on developing the next generation of environmentally friendly renewable energy solutions. And the results are exciting. Developments in solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass and geothermal power can help us meet our energy needs while mitigating the planet-warming effects of burning fossil fuels. A microgrid is a small group of electric power sources and consumers that is normally connected to the commercial power grid but can also operate separately from it. A microgrid can provide backup power should the commercial grid go down and reduce costs by feeding the power generated on the microgrid into the commercial grid. Micro-grids may include a wide variety of power generators, including solar arrays, fuels cells, bi-directional EV/PHEV chargers, and wind turbines. They may also include energy storage devices such as batteries.
