EA BATTERY SIMULATOR

Software for simulation control on bidirectional devices

Graphical simulation on bidirectional supplies

The EA Battery Simulator (EABS) is Windows software with a graphical user interface, made to control bidirectional devices of series EA-PSB 10000. The bidirectional nature of these power supplies, which enables them to source energy or sink energy, is essential for the battery simulation.

The software can be used to simulate lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries, including their electrical and chemical characteristics when charging or discharging. The EABS accomplishes this by implementing a set of value tables and parameter libraries, which have been developed and assembled in cooperation with the renowned Fraunhofer Institute, Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Switchable battery profiles, editable to best match the requirements of the target application, define basic battery parameters such as battery capacity, internal resistance or the state of charge (SOC), but also test such parameters as ambient temperature.

The physical simulation is performed by the programmable power supply, being controlled automatically by the software during test runs. The user can also activate data recording to log files, plus have it displayed in a color graph on screen.

The software is optional and requires a paid license dongle in the form of a USB stick. To operate the dongle, any free USB port is required. Drivers and documentation are included.

Primary features of the battery simulation:

  • The bidirectional power supply can replace a wide spectrum of battery sizes due to the supply’s large voltage and current range
  • Simulation of lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries; further battery types can be added with additional updates
  • Simulates or calculates battery specific values such as battery voltage, charging/discharging current, internal resistance and body temperature, as well as state of charge (SOC)
  • Battery simulation is crucial in the development and product end-testing of:
    – Battery chargers and battery management systems (BMS)
    – Batteries of various kinds (charge and discharge)
  • Suitable for Lithium-ion batteries from 20-80 Ah and lead-acid batteries from 35-140 Ah.
